When women become aware that they have a high risk of developing breast cancer, they can choose to have a prophylactic (preventive) mastectomy to remove their breast tissue. The "previvors" who opt for this risk-reducing surgery confront tremendous mental and physical challenges. But most of these women, even at young ages, don't regret their choices. In fact, for these three previvors under 40, it didn't feel like a hard choice at all.
