Perplexity has introduced Hybrid Compute, a new mode that divides one AI task between models running in the cloud and a smaller model operating directly on a Mac. The system is designed to preserve the power of frontier models while keeping confidential files and identifying information on the computer. Hybrid Compute is part of Perplexity Computer, the company’s agentic platform for research, planning and work across files, apps and the web. A task can begin with cloud-based reasoning, move a sensitive step onto the Mac and return to the cloud without requiring a second prompt or a manually prepared version of the information.
