But the virus poses a serious danger to babies, older adults and immunocompromised people. The disease is the leading cause of hospitalization in infants in the U.S. and was particularly bad in recent seasons. An estimated 58,000 to 80,000 children under five years old and 110,000 to 180,000 older adults in the U.S. are hospitalized with RSV every year.
