Pandey8, Jiří Friml1* In this study, we monitored ROS on the root surface. We identified cytosolic Ca2+ transients as a common mechanism for NADPH oxidase activation and the ROS bursts downstream of many signals. Genetic interference with ROS bursts revealed their essential role in cell wall fortification after mechanoperception, which is required for the soil impedance response and efficient soil penetration. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) have been implicated in multiple signaling processes in plants, but the underlying mechanisms and roles remain enigmatic. …
