Scientific framing, gambling-like design, and regulatory gaps create risks of a new behavioral addiction and democratic manipulation Nizan Geslevich Packin1,2 and Sharon Rabinovitz3,4 F or decades, economists and computer scientists championed online academic and institutional prediction markets (PMs) as elegant instruments of collective intelligence. Yet a 2024 federal court ruling legalizing event-based political con- tracts on commercial PMs in the US catalyzed a qualitative shift. Whereas academic and institutional PMs continue to serve re- search-oriented forecasting purposes, the broader PM landscape has expanded to include gamified, large-scale digital trading platforms enabling continuous, real-time global participation across jurisdic- tions, some operating on crypto-based infrastructure and optimized for engagement over epistemic rigor. …
