Lea2 M any bacteria can take up DNA from their environment and integrate it into their genome (1, 2). This process, called natural transformation, enables acquisition of ad- vantageous traits, such as antibiotic resistance or surface modifications, that allow bacteria to evade recognition by a host’s immune system. During natural transformation, extracellu- lar DNA initially crosses the bacterial outer membrane (in organisms where this is present) and the cell wall. One strand of the incoming DNA molecule is then imported across the cytoplasmic membrane by a pro- tein called ComEC, whereas the other strand is degraded. …
