When Javette Hines was hired as Citigroup Inc.’s senior vice president for supplier diversity in 2008, she says she believed the skills she’d honed in the procurement field for more than a decade would lead to success. At the time the bank was planning to ramp up its use of vendors from under- represented backgrounds. “I took the job as a lawyer and a supply-chain professional,” she says, “not a person who is a DEI professional or a person to do a ‘Black job.’ ” Among her mandates was to help the bank join the presti- gious Billion Dollar Roundtable, a group of US corporations that voluntarily spend at least $1 billion annually with minority-owned suppliers. …
