● By Jason Schreier For decades, fracking was a high-tech phenomenon (or an environmental nightmare, depending on whom you asked) almost exclusively of the US energy industry. But now, many of the easiest-to-reach oil and gas deposits have been extracted from around the world using conventional drilling. National governments are also facing rising electricity demand, industrial expansions and petrochemical build-outs, all of which require loads of natural gas.
