● By Rivaldo Jantjies Global telecommunication companies operating in South Africa do so through partnerships with local businesses that are partly owned by Black citizens. That’s to comply with equality rules the country instituted after the end of apart- heid. SpaceX has spent the past year try- ing to get those rules changed. SpaceX offers internet service in about two dozen countries in Africa and contin- ues to push hard, directly and through allies, for entry into South Africa. Johann Rupert, the South African billionaire owner of luxury goods conglomerate Compagnie Financière Richemont SA, accompanied President Cyril Ramaphosa on a state visit to the White House a year ago, declaring in a meeting with Trump and Musk, “We need Starlink.” …
