Although the proportional requirements for macronutrients vary across species, they are tightly regulated within a given species. Animals use both preingestive (taste) and postingestive systems that detect macronutrients in the environment and help maintain appropriate internal nutrient balance. Proteins are composed of essential amino acids (EAAs) and nonessential amino acids (NEAAs). Substantial progress has been made to understand how the taste system detects amino acids. …
