Testing, sequencing, and clinical trial efforts spring to life as Bundibugyo virus spreads KAI KUPFERSCHMIDT W hen the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) confirmed its 17th Ebola outbreak last week, two things immediately stood out to experts. One was the fact it was caused by a rare species of Ebola called Bundibugyo. The other was its sheer size: 246 suspected cases and 80 deaths at the time. The virus was apparently spreading rapidly, possibly for weeks, before it was detected. “It’s a heck of a lot of cases to be under the radar,” says Anne Rimoin, an epidemiologist at the University of California, Los Angeles who has worked on previous disease outbreaks in the DRC. …
