Organic qubits controlled with light could rival atoms, ions, and crystal defects ZACK SAVITSKY I n 2015, Ilai Schwartz set out to show how quantum physics could revolutionize medical imaging. The co-founder of Germany’s NVision Imaging Tech- nologies began by using diamonds to align, or polarize, the tiny magnetic fields of molecular tracers, which were injected in people’s tissues to strengthen the signal of MRI scan- ners. The company eventually shifted from diamonds to other polarizing molecules, which boosted the signal by up to 100,000 times. quantum computer, the work high- lights how designer molecules could challenge more established quantum computing platforms.
