Lithgow- Bertelloni INTRODUCTION: Active faults shape landscapes by coupling tectonic deformation with surface erosion. Fault slip produces differential vertical and lateral displacement, modifying river base level and channel steepness, metrics that are widely used to infer spatial patterns of rock uplift. Beyond these kinematic effects, active faults also damage surrounding rock, increasing fracturing and weather- ing and thereby enhancing erosional efficiency. Although regional studies show elevated erosional efficiency near faults, the global extent, magnitude, and controlling mechanisms of fault- related rock damage remain unclear, particularly relative to climatic and lithologic influences. …
