Plasma membrane nanoclusters help plants distinguish growth-promoting warmth from damaging heat Seth J. Davis and James Ronald P lants must distinguish between warmth that can be used for growth and heat from which they need to protect themselves. How they make that distinction has become a central problem in the study of plant temperature responses. The field has explained much about how cells survive high tempera- ture through the heat shock response (1) but less about how plants distinguish one thermal range from the next. Both warmth and heat stress alter lipid composition, protein mo- bility, and local membrane properties at the cell surface, mak- ing the membrane a likely site for this earliest interpretation of temperature (1–4). …
