The fly gut integrates nutrient-specific appetite control Stephen J. Simpson and David Raubenheimer A ttaining nutritional balance is among the most important and complex tasks facing any organism. The functional challenge is to meet changing requirements for dozens of nutrients in environments where foods vary in com- position and availability both in space and time. Natural selection has solved this problem innumerable times, yielding lessons relevant for seeking solutions to nutrition-related diseases that beset humans exposed to modern industrialized diets.
