At those temperatures the asphalt melts, dogs and cats stare list- lessly from the floor, and humans like Véronique Haynal seek shade or water. What Haynal and many others in north- ern Europe generally don’t look for is air conditioning. “I just went for a swim,” the retired psychologist says. “That was my air conditioning.” Anyone who lives in Europe or has visited in June, July or August can tell you the place can get hot.
