Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a gradual loss of kidney function that affects an estimated 37 million American adults and results in 14.6 deaths per 100,000 population (1). Once kidney damage occurs, it im- pairs the removal of toxic metabolites derived from the gut microbiota, termed uremic toxins (2), leading to further deterioration of physiologi- cal functions and progression of renal failure (3). CKD is associated with a microbiome imbalance characterized by an increased abundance of Enterobacteriaceae (4–8). Fecal microbiota transplantation from CKD patients into antibiotic-treated mice (6) or germ-free mice (9) results in increased plasma levels of uremic toxins and creatinine, a marker of kid- ney damage, compared with transfer of fecal samples from healthy con- trols. …
