Stacks of boron nitride sheets can be arranged to emit deep ultraviolet light Bernard Gil1 and Guillaume Cassabois1,2 A quantum well is a few-nanometers-thin layer of semicon- ductor material that traps charge carriers such as elec- trons or holes (counterparts of electrons), maximizing the probability that they recombine to emit light. Its physical properties cannot be described by classical physics but are governed by quantum mechanics. These high-efficiency solid-state light emitters—especially in the short-wavelength ultraviolet (UV) spectrum—are essential for disinfection, sensing, and microchip fa- brication.
