The UK government has been a vocal advocate for biodiversity conservation and has made ambitious national commitments on biodiversity protection and recovery, including the protection of 30% of UK land, seas, and freshwater by 2030 (1). However, recent and proposed changes to planning policy in England threaten prog- ress toward the UK’s biodiversity targets. England should commit to its environmental goals, which present mutual benefits for its biodiversity, economy, and society (1). The UK’s natural habitats and biota remain heavily depleted (2), and in practice, as little as 4.9% of UK land may be effectively conserved for biodiversity (3). …
