Effect could lead to MRI-like diagnostics and switchable, remote-controlled drugs ROBERT F. SERVICE A number of animals use Earth’s magnetism to navigate, but magnetic fields otherwise seem to pass through organisms unnoticed. That’s generally a good thing: It means physicians can use MRI machines and their strong magnetic fields without wreaking havoc on the body. But in a report last week in Nature, researchers reported intentionally engineering proteins to emit less light in the presence of a weak magnetic field and focused pulses of energy at radio frequencies. The effect could lead to MRI-like imagers capable of tracking disease-linked proteins throughout the body. …
