During aging, stem cell persistence is favored over functionality, resulting in delayed responses to injury Julia von Maltzahn1,2,3 Aging affects nearly all cells of an organism. However, not all cells and tissues are affected equally and individuals do not age similarly, which highlights the disparity between chronological and biological aging (1). Proposed hallmarks of aging include the reduction of stem cell numbers, induction of cellular senescence (cessation of cell division), and altered intercellular communication (1). How do individual cells handle these aging-dependent alterations, and how can they can escape them? On page 517 of this issue, Kang et al. (2) report that a tumor suppressor protein in muscle stem cells increases long-term survival at the expense of functionality. …
