The ongoing hostilities that began with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 have led to the widespread degradation of Ukraine’s chernozem soils, which represent nearly one quarter of the world’s most fertile black soils (1). Chernozem soils’ stable aggregates, high organic carbon content, and biological complexity reflect millen- nia of formation under specific climatic and ecological conditions (2).
