Google co-founder Sergey Brin has spent $100 million opposing California’s Proposition 40, turning the proposed billionaire tax into one of the most expensive political contests in the state. The measure would impose a one-time tax equal to 5% of the net worth of California’s billionaires. Brin’s intervention shows how fiercely the state’s wealthiest residents are prepared to resist a tax aimed directly at their assets. Unlike an income tax, Proposition 40 would reach beyond salaries, dividends and realized investment gains. It would examine the estimated value of everything a billionaire owns, including company shares, private businesses, property and other investments. The campaign is therefore about more than a single payment. …
