OpenAI’s transformation from a research laboratory into one of the world’s most influential technology companies has carried a striking cost: many of the people who shaped its early science, safety philosophy and technical direction are no longer inside the organization. The departures have accumulated into something larger than ordinary executive turnover. Ilya Sutskever, Mira Murati, Jan Leike, Bob McGrew, Barret Zoph and several other prominent researchers have left across successive waves. Some founded new AI companies, while others joined laboratories offering greater independence, different safety priorities or an opportunity to rebuild without the commercial pressure surrounding ChatGPT.
