德国马克斯·普朗克动物行为研究所的雷瓦特·蒂莱库马尔团队分析了苏门答腊野生猩猩超过1700小时的观察记录,发现幼崽在个体学习和社会学习上的依赖程度差异很大。社会学习能力强的幼崽即使很少独自探索,也能通过观察同伴获得较广泛的食谱。研究还发现,幼崽在观察其他猩猩后,会继续摆弄新物体或尝试新食物约145分钟。

The findings suggest that orangutans have different strategies for developing broad survival skills, says Revathe Thillaikumar at the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior in Germany. Young orangutans acquire a substantial body of knowledge before they can survive independently, including which foods are safe to eat, where to find them and how to process them. …
