Alamy There are two films called Red Sonja — the 1985 Brigitte Nielsen vehicle now out on 4K, and a 2025 redo starring Matilda Lutz which is on disc and streaming. Neither is exactly great, but they make an entertaining double bill. Even their shoddier aspects are quite fun, though the sword-slinging hero keeps being upstaged by camp arch-nemeses: wicked lesbian queen Sandahl Bergman (1985) and Elon-alike manchild ancient emperor Robert Sheehan (2025). The credit “created by Robert E. Howard and Roy Thomas” covers an IP tangle. The two-word Sonja pitch is “Conan’s girlfriend”, though in the comics — she debuted in Conan The Barbarian #23 (1972) — they’re more comrades-in-arms than lovers. …
