Unreal is one of PC gaming’s milestone first-person shooters, every bit as significant as the likes of Doom, Quake and Half-Life. Despite this, you’re far less likely to hear it discussed today as you are the early works of id Software and Valve. Calling it forgotten would be unfair, but it is far more trapped in its era than the other ’90s FPS classics. There are numerous reasons for this. Unreal lacks the same modding community that keeps those other shooters in the current consciousness. In addition, Unreal has been somewhat buried by its own legacy, lending its name to both a more popular multiplayer spinoff and an engine which powers more than a quarter of all modern videogames. …
