FINDING the next big theory of everything will require updating the standard model of particle physics, our current best model of all existing particles and forces, except gravity. Researchers just put new bounds on 132 possible ways to do that. But this model fails to fully explain some known phenomena, such as dark matter. This has sent researchers looking for ways to upgrade or amend it. One approach is to look for novel quantum fields that violate Lorentz’s argument. Researchers listed all theoretical candidates in the 1990s, in the so-called standard model extension (SME), noting the 132 that were most likely to appear in near-term experiments. …
