Pioneering studies are underway amid difficult conditions to address Bundibugyo’s threat KAI KUPFERSCHMIDT M ore than 2 months after it was discovered, the latest Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is still out of con- trol. The country had reported 2423 cases by 19 July, including 967 deaths, already making this the third largest Ebola outbreak ever recorded. Dozens of new cases are confirmed every day. Those grim statistics also mean the outbreak is a chance for scientists to learn more about Bundibugyo, the rare Ebola species responsible, and test vaccines and drugs to fight it. …
