Pringle1,8* Dung beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae and Aphodiinae) feed and nest in feces (hereafter, “beetles” refers to dung beetles unless otherwise specified). Most species belong to one of three functional groups: “Dwellers” feed and nest inside dung piles; “tunnelers” bury dung beneath piles; and “rollers” move dung away from piles and then bury it (20). By breaking up, distributing, and burying dung, beetles contribute to vital ecosystem services such as soil aeration, nutrient cycling, and seed dispersal, which enhance plant growth and carbon storage (21, 22). …
