INTRODUCTION: Positive-sense single-stranded RNA (+ssRNA) viruses assemble viral replication complexes (VRCs) by remodeling host endomembranes and organelles. This remodeling can disrupt organelle integrity and generate stress signals that intersect with cellular quality control and immune signaling. Selective autophagy is a quality control pathway that targets specific damaged or superfluous cellular components for lysosomal or vacuolar degradation, but how systemic viral infection engages selective autophagy and what it contributes to disease outcomes remain unclear.
