A robotic spacecraft is preparing to attempt something that sounds simple only from the ground: catch a drifting space telescope and carry it into a higher orbit. LINK launched on July 3 on a mission to prevent the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory from falling into the atmosphere. Built by Katalyst Space Technologies, the 880-pound spacecraft will approach a telescope that was never designed to be captured or serviced. Its three robotic arms must secure Swift without damaging its instruments, solar panels or structure, after which xenon-fueled thrusters will gradually lift the combined spacecraft over several months. Swift remains productive after more than two decades in orbit, observing gamma-ray bursts, exploding stars and other brief cosmic events. …
