The European Commission has fined Google €890 million, approximately $1 billion, after finding that its search engine and Play Store violated rules intended to limit the power of the largest digital platforms. The penalty combines two separate decisions under the Digital Markets Act. A €460 million fine concerns the promotion of Google’s own services in search results, while another €430 million addresses restrictions preventing app makers from directing customers toward cheaper payment options outside Google Play. Regulators ordered the company to end both practices.
