With no FDA-approved product for women, sourcing and dosing of the hormone have become messy gray areas. How did we get here, and what does testosterone actually do for our bodies? Women’s Health investigates. On an early December morning in 2019, a panel of visitors to the Food and Drug Administration gathered at a hotel outside of Washington, D.C., to review some data. A pharmaceutical giant named AMAG Pharmaceuticals had petitioned the FDA to approve a testosterone product for women who were surgically induced into menopause and experiencing hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD).
