The 1964 Civil Rights Act created the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and required the agency to monitor progress toward an equal opportunity society (1). To fulfill this legal mandate, the EEOC has collected data on the race, sex, and occupation of employees in US workplaces since 1966 and data on earnings from private sector firms since 2017. EEOC data have powered six decades of research, helping policy-makers and employers understand what does and does not work in promoting equal employment opportunity (2–8). Yet on 14 May 2026, the EEOC proposed a regulatory rule change to stop all future EEOC workplace reporting obligations under Title VII and other civil rights laws (9). …
