Pay off your debts first Years before we ever thought about retiring, my husband and I wanted to make sure we wouldn’t still have a mortgage. So in our late 40s, we decided to refinance and get a 15-year mortgage, so that it would be paid off by the time we retired. I had worked at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch for a long time, and when the newspaper was sold, I saw the writing on the wall and took a buyout.
