As des- serts become increasingly borderless, members of the world’s largest population can’t help but wonder: When will Indian sweets have their global moment? India has a long tradition of sugary snacks and gift-giving, with classic sweet- shops, called halwais, supplying freshly fried treats for weddings, festivals and other parties. But outside of a handful of big brands, few of these storefronts reach an audience beyond their own commu- nities.
