O N THE FINAL DAY OF THE CRETACEOUS PERIOD, some 66 million years ago, Earth was teeming with a dazzling variety of dino- saurs. In North America, the superpredator Tyrannosaurus rex stalked its favorite prey, the three-horned Triceratops.
