There was something exciting in the cinematic air in the late 50s and early 60s. New filmmakers with fresh voices were emerging globally, seemingly on a weekly basis. In the US, we had John Cassavetes, Shirley Clarke and Lionel Rogosin alongside avant-gardists like Jonas Mekas. The Free Cinema filmmakers in Britain led by Lindsay Anderson, Karel Reisz and Tony Richardson gave voice to the Angry Young Men in duffle coats. Milos Forman, Véra Chytilova and Jiri Menzel pioneered a new brand of Czech filmmaking. Nagisa Oshima, Yoshishige Yoshida and Shohei Imamura were breaking down barriers in Japan. There were great indie-spirited film movements popping up everywhere, but the most significant, certainly in quantity, was the French New Wave. …
