MARTY MAUSER CONTAINS multitudes. A singular creation from Josh Safdie, co-written with his regular comrade Ronald Bronstein (who worked on all the Safdie brothers collaborations), he is quite the cocktail: an unashamed hustler drawn from real table-tennis players, from Safdie and Bronstein’s imagination, and from Safdie’s own life. Tying it all together, though: dreams. “I think dreams are infectious,” says Safdie. “They drive humanity.” Safdie is a lifelong dreamer — and table- tennis die-hard. Growing up in New York in the 1980s, he was introduced to the sport by his father, Alberto, who used to play in tournaments in the ’50s. “He taught it to me as kind of a discipline,” says Safdie. …
