“IT’S QUITE SURREAL, to be honest.” Akinola Davies Jr is speaking with Empire days after the news that his semi-autobiographical feature debut — about a father and sons’ trip to Lagos set against the ’93 Nigerian presidential election —has been selected as the UK’s entry for Best International Feature Film at next year’s Academy Awards. The news may feel otherworldly to Davies Jr, but the response to the film has been very real.
