Recovery of wildflower populations from extreme drought reveals hidden evolutionary resilience Mark C. Urban1 and Laurinne J. Balstad2 Although human disturbances, such as climate change, habitat degradation, and pollution, can extirpate wild populations and even species, populations might also adapt to these changes and survive (1). This so-called evolutionary rescue offers a rare reason for hope in conservation. However, demonstrating evolutionary rescue requires a high standard of evidence not often quantified for natural populations. On page 1172 of this issue, Anstett et al. (2) report how adaptive evolution rescued certain populations of a common wildflower from extreme drought. …
