THERE IS A DEFIANT, outlaw spirit to It Was Just An Accident, the 12th feature film by Iranian director Jafar Panahi. Like nearly all of his work over the past decade, it was filmed in secret, without a permit, away from the watchful eyes of the Iranian authorities, and like those films, it is unlikely to enjoy a release in his home country, where the ruling regime still imposes strict censorship. But it takes on a particularly potent flavour, considering what it is in direct response to: this is Panahi’s first film since being arrested and imprisoned in 2022 for making “anti-government propaganda”. …
