We witness Russell Tovey in the lead role of unassuming family man Barclay, who’s accidentally recruited to help save the planet from a war between humans and the amphibious Sea Devils, first seen in Doctor Who in 1972. Barclay works for UNIT (the Unified Intelligence Taskforce the Doctor’s been involved with for decades), but he’s basically just a taxi booker. “He’s an ordinary man being thrown into an extraordinary world simply because of paperwork,” explains Davies. It’s soon apparent, as we watch Tovey’s character having a fraught discussion with his UNIT superiors (Jemma Redgrave and Ruth Madeley), that this story has an urgent political edge. …
