Follicles produce hormones and eggs that regulate the menstrual cycle and fer- tility, respectively . Female mammals are born with a finite number of follicles (ovarian reserve), which dictates their re- productive life span. The ovarian reserve decreases with age, and the trajectory of this loss depends on genetics, autoimmune and metabolic conditions, exposure to environmental contaminants, and unintended effects of medical treatments. In women with premature ovarian insufficiency (POI), ovarian function is lost before age 40. …
