Entangled atoms send data securely— neutralizing backdoor hardware threat ZACK SAVITSKY C racking the secret codes that safeguard sensitive information on the internet requires solving math problems that once seemed impossible. But worries are growing that a powerful quantum computer could solve those problems easily, exposing banking information and national secrets. Luckily, physicists have a way to fight quan- tum with quantum: a theoretically foolproof encryption protocol that relies on the magic of entangled quantum particles. The scheme, known as device-independent quantum key distribution (DI-QKD), closes loopholes in existing methods that left hardware vulner- able to hacking. …
