INTRODUCTION: Myelin is essential for normal central nervous system (CNS) function and is disrupted and/or lost in a range of human diseases. In conditions such as multiple sclerosis (MS) and in animal models of demyelination, the loss of myelin can trigger the regenerative process of remyelination, which is primarily mediated by the generation of new oligodendrocytes.
