ry January is upon us. The month provides an opportunity to drink less, or not at all. But for people evaluating their long-term relationship with alcohol, what happens once the month is over? Back in the heady 1990s and 2000s, word on the street was that a drink or two a day, especially red wine, was good for health. “Everyone loved that story,” says psychiatric researcher Anya Topiwala of the University of Oxford. Now the pendulum has swung. Drinking even a few times a week has been linked with an increased risk for cancer, dementia and other health problems.
