The Karun River—Iran’s longest, largest, and only navigable river (1)—has historically connected the oil-rich southwestern provinces to the Persian Gulf’s economic hubs (2), but today it is threatened by desiccation and pollution. Iran must take action to restore and preserve this crucial natural resource. Mismanagement, compounded by recurrent droughts, is pushing the communities that depend on the Karun toward ecological collapse.
