NIH director was prevented from reappointing institute head JOCELYN KAISER and JON COHEN L ate last month, as the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) neared the end of an already chaotic year, two more controversial changes of its sci- entific leadership shook the agency, amplifying concerns about political interference. Earlier in the year, Bhattacharya had recommended renewal of the NINDS head. In a 30 December 2025 email telling staff Koroshetz’s last day would be 24 January, Bhattacharya called the neurologist’s performance “exceptional.” But the director added, “the Department of Health and Hu- man Services (HHS) has elected to pursue a leadership transition.” …
